At first glance, it would seem that Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont is about as far left as they come. However, upon closer inspection, it is easy to see that the most radical leftists are not the senator himself but those who he surrounds himself with and employs. And his latest hire takes the cake.
In Sanders’ failing effort to beat out former Vice President Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential race, he knows he is going to have to win over a vast number of black voters. Biden has had much success at this, while Sanders has floundered time and again. And that is precisely why he just announced the promotion of outspoken Phillip Agnew to the position of senior advisor.
Agnew has long been a voice for black America and co-founder of Dream Defenders, which was started in 2012 after the death of Florida teen Trayvon Martin. Agnew described his work for the Sanders campaign by saying, “Black people – all Black people – are a central part of our movement. Our platform is about righting what is wrong in this country. Our campaign is inclusive of Black people across age, class, and gender lines. We’ve come a long way and more work to do. I’m excited to continue to grow and amplify the work of our Black organizing department.”
Sanders said of Agnew, “He is a gifted organizer and one of his generation’s most critical voices on issues of race and equity. He has and will continue to push me and this movement to deliver on what is owed to Black people who have yet to experience reciprocity in this country.”
However, bringing Agnew on board is causing some waves that Bernie really doesn’t need right now and might actually cost him more than what he thinks he has just gained.
You see, Agnew is not your typical activist. Instead, he likes to refer to himself as a “militant.”
With Bernie’s campaign being under constant scrutiny, now so is Agnew. And what America is finding out about him is not even close to what we want to see in a leader.
Take his organization mentioned above Dream Defenders, for example. While it is definitely a political group that fights for black rights, it also has ties to a US-designated terrorist organization known as the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine or PFLP. This group as been on the terrorist watch list since 1997 and its website admits to carrying out acts such as suicide bombings, car bombings, hijacking, military raids, and more against Israeli forces and the civilians that support them.
Dream Defenders also supports the BDS movement that would seek to destroy the nation of Israel by using boycotts, divestments, and sanctions.
But that’s not even close to the worst of it.
In addition, Agnew has long been of the mind that the terrorist attacks of 9/11 were, in fact, America’s fault. And he has posted several statements on his social media accounts that confirm this.
On the day before the ninth anniversary of the attacks, Agnew tweeted, “Tomorrow America remembers the day that she turned on herself, dismantled her constitution, and killed her own citizens in the name of money.”
Then on the 15th anniversary, he posted an image online that depicted American government planes flying into the Twin Towers. He added the comment, “#neverforget what goes around comes around.” The image was one drawn by anti-Israel political cartoonist Carlos Latuff, who won second place in Iran’s International Holocaust Cartoon Competition in 2006. Yes, Iran actually has such a competition every year.
And then there is the fact that he has called Zionism, or Judaism, “a racist, exploitative, and exclusionary ideology.”
He has also proudly defended that all prisons and police departments should be completely disassembled, claiming they are racist to their core, as are our currently closed borders. If it were up to Agnew, our nation would have open borders the likes we have never seen before.
Naturally, not all US citizens are too happy with Bernie’s new choice in advisor, and many are calling him out on it.
Certainly, a man trying to gain the White House would have more sense than to appoint such an individual over his campaign. And the fact that he has begs us to ask whether he knew about these radical views ahead of time or just didn’t bother to ask.
In either case, it isn’t a good look for him.
