As a magazine that has encouraged Christians and evangelists alike to live out the Word of God and stand by the truth for decades, you would assume that any article written by “Christianity Today” would push for a more unbiased political view. However, as their editor-in-chief proved last week, that’s not always the case.
In fact, editor-in-chief Mark Galli wrote an entire article that calls for the removal of President Donald Trump from office and berates any who would disagree.
He wrote, “Consider how your justification of Mr. Trump influences your witness to your Lord and Savior. Consider what an unbelieving world will say if you continued to brush off Mr. Trump’s immoral words and behavior in the cause of political expediency.”
“If we don’t reverse course now, will anyone take anything we say about justice and righteousness with ay seriousness for decades to come?” And he continued inciting that Trump’s “broken” character would only hinder the case against abortion.
But then Mr. Galli further erred by referring to the founder of Christianity Today, the late Billy Graham, and inciting that this was a continuation of his work.
It didn’t take long for conservatives and fellow Christians alike to weigh in on the magazine’s op-ed piece.
One of the first to do so was none other than Billy Graham’s own flesh and blood. His son Franklin Graham made sure to post on Twitter his disappointment in an establishment that should have been a significant part of his father’s legacy. He also pointed out that his father both “believed in” and “voted for Donald Trump.”
Graham wrote, “@CTMagazine released an editorial saying @POTUS Trump should be removed from office & they invoked my father’s name, so I felt I should respond. Yes, @BillyGraham founded Christianity Today; but no, he would not agree w/their piece. He’d be disappointed.”
As someone who likely honored and revered their founder, Mark Galli, should be ashamed to know that he could disappoint and trample on the name of Billy Graham in such a way.
But more than that, this proves that some within the Christian and evangelical sect don’t believe all that they say they do. Instead, they have just been “unmasked” as “liberal evangelicals who have preached social gospel for decades,” as Liberty University’s Jerry Falwell Jr. says.
He tweeted, “Less than 20% of evangelicals supported @HillyClinton in 2016 but now @CTmagazine has removed any doubt that they are part of the same 17% or so of liberal evangelicals who have preached social gospel for decades! CT unmasked!”
Indeed, they have been.
You know who Mr. Galli and any who support his opinion piece remind me of? The Jewish religious leaders living in the time of Christ. They had lived a life devoted to God’s teachings, trained to know all the prophecies. And yet when the time came for those prophecies to be fulfilled by “our Lord and Savior,” Jesus Christ, they rejected him, choosing to let their jealousy and power rule their hearts and minds.
They plotted and planned, seeking at every turn to try and destroy him and his truth. And they eventually succeeded, or so they thought. They betrayed his trust and his love and crucified him.
Now, I am in no way comparing President Trump to Jesus Christ. Trump is merely a man. He is no religious savior, nor should he be put on a pedestal for all to strive to be like. He, like Eve, Moses, Rahab, David, and the apostle Paul, has made a great many mistakes. But that doesn’t mean that God can’t use him to do good.
However, he is coming under much of the same types of attacks. Ever since he presented himself as a potential for the presidency, he has been demeaned and hated by those seeking the power he holds. They hurl words of insult, spout lies that would seek to destroy his reputation, and continue to try and nail him to any cross he might stick to.
And in the end, they might succeed. But, just as the Pharisees did with Christ, they will realize that their success is actually a loss. A loss of freedom, the loss of a well-meaning heart, and the loss of someone who has actually done right by our nation and the freedom of religion these liberals claim to hold so dear.
Galli, just like Pharisees, has just tipped his hand and showed his true and Judas-like traitorous colors.
