It’s no secret that New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio has made a royal mess out of his city in dealing with the coronavirus pandemic. First, he said the threat of infection was nothing to worry about in February. Then in March, he finally shut some things down but then couldn’t even abide by his own rules. And now, as things seem to be going much better and the curve is being flattened, he just turned his citizens into his own personal army of spies.
Yep, his communist roots are coming out even more.
On Saturday, de Blasio flooded his social media accounts with a message for his city about how to handle the coronavirus from here on out. Quick summary: Nark on your neighbors.
In the Twitter video, the mayor encourages his citizens to continue approved social distancing guidelines. But if they see someone who isn’t following the rules, de Blasio gives them a way to report it.
See a line in the grocery that is too close together? What about a coffee shop that is too busy? Or are the neighbor kids playing basketball in the court together? In either case, all you have to do is take a picture of the situation, send it to the mayor’s staff, and he’ll make sure the cops show up to “fix” it.
The mayor wrote, “How do you report places that aren’t enforcing social distancing? It’s simple: just snap a photo and text it to 311…”
Sounds great, right?
According to de Blasio, “New Yorkers, you have been extraordinary at social distancing.” However, things are not as good as they could be. So let’s be sure to keep each in check…
He told New Yorkers on Saturday, “Thank you to everyone who has done this the right way, but we still know there’s some people who need to get the message.” You know, the ones who got his first message in March about going out, painting the town red, and living their lives despite the virus.
He continued, “And that means sometimes making sure enforcement is there to educate people and make clear we’ve got to have social distancing. So, now it is easier than ever – when you see a crowd when you see a line that’s not distanced when you see a supermarket that’s too crowded, anything, you can report it right away so we can get help there to fix the problem.”
Now, I’m all for keeping our communities healthy and safe. And right now, that means social distancing, as de Blasio says, is a must. But it is also crucial that we respect each other, as neighbors, as co-workers, as friends and family. And that means trusting each other, for the most part, to make the right decisions and respect you in return.
Taking a quick picture of the neighbor kids shooting some hoops and reporting it to the authorities does anything but that. In fact, it will only make matters worse. How in the world are you supposed to trust your fellow Americans if there is a threat of tattling hanging over your head?
But congrats to the communist want to be… He just created a way to turn his entire city against each other and become his own spies. I mean, this is straight out of China or the Soviet Union’s playbook.
However, I don’t think we have to worry too much. By the looks of the comments on social media, most New Yorkers aren’t exactly thrilled that de Blasio has asked them all to rat each other out.
Many of New York’s first “reports” to the mayor about social distancing mishaps were images of the man himself, going to a public gym during the lockdown, taking long walks on the opposite side of town, and encouraging citizens to ride the subway by doing so himself.
Apparently, he is one of the many on the left who assumes laws are made for everyone else but him. Fortunately, his city understands this more than most and isn’t willing to let him get away with it, not that it will be ‘his’ city for much longer…
