As a former Vice President running to be the next president, you would expect to get some sort of recognition while on your campaign tour. However, for Joe Biden, it seems that simply isn’t the case, as this recent encounter with the locals in Iowa proves.
In a small eatery in the early voting state, Biden attempted one more in a long string of sparsely populated meet and greets. Usually, this kind of event would require him to take a walkthrough of the place, shaking hands and making pleasantries with citizens in the hopes of gaining their attention and support as he travels through the country.
But this time, things went a little differently.
He walked into the Corn Stalk Café on Saturday was met with complete indifference and absolutely no recognition.
And the whole thing was caught on camera by Politico’s Natasha Korecki. She tweeted out, “That time when former VP @joebiden is standing right next to you at the Corn Stalk Café and you just don’t care.”
Not only did the man caught on camera not care that Joe Biden was standing next to him, trying to get his attention, but he was obviously more concerned about the Auburn vs. Alabama football game on the TV.
But even more shocking was that he still wasn’t interested in Biden after being told he was there.
Korecki said, “I asked the guy if he just wasn’t a fan of Biden’s and he says ‘who?’” To clarify, Korecki said, “the former VP.”
She continued saying, “The man, who farms in the Missouri Valley says he’s never heard of Joe Biden.”
“He says, ‘are you serious?’ When I say he was Obama’s veep, I get an ‘ohhhh. I’m not an Obama fan.”
But that by far was not the worse jab. He then said, “This is Republican country,” as if to explain himself further.
Now, this Iowa farmer could just be someone who doesn’t turn on the TV very often or get out much, and so is terribly uninformed about the presidential race.
But we aren’t sure just how likely that is, especially when you consider the last presidential campaign cycle. In 2016, I doubt a single person, man, woman, or child, couldn’t identify both frontrunners from either party.
Sure, Donald Trump has been a celebrity nearly all his life, and Hillary Clinton was a former First Lady and a Senator for years before she ran. So they both had lots of national attention.
But Biden shouldn’t really be all that different.
After all, he was the Vice President of the United States for eight years, not to mention he had been involved in politics for years before that.
Furthermore, he has been the one constant frontrunner of the Democratic Party since the onset of the presidential race, for the most part. In fact, one of Biden’s main selling points is that his brand and visage are well known. People won’t vote for someone they don’t know. And he regularly paints himself as the one who has always been there, who is well known, respected, and a common household name, even if he isn’t your first choice.
Yet, this man proves that Biden is not so well known after all.
And if Biden isn’t recognized, can you imagine that anyone else within the Democratic presidential field will be?
I doubt it.
If this man is any indication, it doesn’t matter what they have to say, what policies they promise to enforce, what they will do for the country, or even how famous they are. What matters is that they are not Trump. They are not Republican. Period.
And I can’t imagine this is the only American citizen who doesn’t seem to care.
As the man said, “this is Republican country.” This signifies that there is a whole community of people out there who don’t recognize and simply don’t care about the Democratic agenda.
These are the people who came out of the woodwork to put Trump in office, the ones who haven’t cared to vote at all until Trump, and who will make sure Trump is given another four years.
They are the ones the Democrats underestimated in 2016, and by the looks of it, the ones they should be continued to be afraid of in 2020.
