One of the parlor games played by the left is to discuss how much a current Republican president is like Adolf Hitler. Every Republican to occupy the White House since World War II, except for Eisenhower, has been compared at one time or another to the Fuhrer. Ike only escaped the treatment because he led the armies that defeated Nazi Germany.
Donald Trump has been no exception. The irrepressible Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez accused the president of throwing illegal aliens into concentration camps, with the difference that instead of tossing them into gas chambers, he made them drink toilet water.
Recently, CNN brought on a guest, a former Duke University Psychiatry Department Chairman named Dr. Allen Frances, to provide some insights into the mental health of the president of the United States. Dr. Frances was judged to be an expert on the subject even though he has never met Trump, not to mention having him on the couch.
The former department chairman did think that he was competent enough to declare that Trump “is as destructive a person in this century as Hitler, Stalin, and Mao were in the last century.”
Even though the CNN host Brian Stelter did not challenge Francis on his assertion, made in the present tense and not the future tense, the statement was too much even for that network.
“In the 20th century, Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin launched World War II, which killed an estimated 50 million people worldwide, including the 6 million Jews who were deliberately exterminated in concentration camps. Also, the communist policies of Lenin and Stalin killed an estimated 25 million people in the USSR, and the Communist regime in China has killed over 65 million people since 1949, according to The Black Book of Communism.”
Remarkably still, Francis refused to say that Trump has (or will) do all of these horrible things because he is mentally ill. The people who are mentally ill are the people who elected him. He stated, “The second issue is that calling Trump crazy hides the fact that we’re crazy for having elected him and even crazier for allowing his crazy policies to persist.”
Francis went on to ascribe several policies to mental illness. “It’s crazy for us to be destroying the climate our children will live in. It’s crazy to be giving tax cuts to the rich that will add trillions of dollars to the debt our children will have to pay. It’s crazy to be destroying our democracy by claiming that the press and the courts are the enemy of the people.”
Hot Air’s Allahpundit wondered for just a moment what Dr. Francis meant when he suggested that Trump has (will) kill more people than Hitler, Stalin and Mao combined. Usually, when one accuses a president of the United States of mass murder it is in the context of launching a global thermonuclear war. Liberals accused Reagan of salivating for a nuclear Armageddon with the Soviets, though the truth turned out to be the exact opposite.
However, nuclear war is so 1980s as an existential fear for the liberal elites. Besides, Trump has dealt with enemies of the United States with forbearance, such as when he canceled a strike on Iranian targets after Iran shot down an American drone Allahpundit concluded that it’s climate change that is worrying Dr. Francis. He tweeted:
“Terrible damage Trump is doing to world climate at this global warming tipping point may be irreversible/could kill hundreds of millions of people in the coming decades.
“Many of them our children & grandchildren & their children.
“This is an existential crisis for humanity.”
Brian Stelter offered what seemed to be a lame excuse to why he did not offer some push back to Francis’ assertions.
“I agree that I should have interrupted after that line. I wish I had heard him say it, but I was distracted by tech difficulties (that’s why the show open didn’t look the way it normally does, I had two computers at the table, etc). Not hearing the comment is my fault.”
Dr. Francis’ assessment came soon after Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vermont offered his version of the Green New Deal that included, among other things, jailing oil company executives for crimes against the environment. One would be excused for wondering who is crazier, Trump supporters or anyone who would vote for Bernie.
