For the longest time, Barack Obama was careful not to endorse any of the Democratic presidential candidates. He didn’t want to show favoritism, even though the whole country was waiting for him to endorse Biden. It’s what presidents do for their vice presidents.
Obama’s lack of an endorsement was loud and clear. It was as if he was telling the country he didn’t want to support Biden without telling us as such.
But now, when all that is left is Biden, Obama seems to be ready to endorse out loud and proud.
He’s attempting to transfer some of his popularity to Biden in an effort for a Democrat to take the presidency.
Obama has been trying to transfer his popularity to Democrats for years. It hasn’t always worked, though, which is why the Democrats lost control of the House in 2010 and the Senate in 2014.
What Obama is doing now to help Biden is by holding small-dollar fundraisers in a virtual space. As of right now, he’s raised over $4 million from 120,000 individual donors.
This is certainly going to help Biden’s ranking because he needs some kind of help. He’s not able to get elected on his own accord because he can’t seem to keep his mouth closed – and there are real concerns about his mental stability.
While Obama helping him is a good sign for the Democrats, it’s also asking Obama to do what he has failed to do in the past – use his popularity to help others within his party.
According to Obama’s team, he’s got a busy schedule from now through the fall. It’s not just to get Biden in office, either. It’s to promote the Democrats as a whole, including those who are running for House and Senate positions.
Democrats are counting on Obama to bring in the black vote and to get some added energy behind Biden’s campaign.
According to a former White House communications director, Dan Pfeiffer, there two groups of voters that Biden has to move if he wants to get elected – and they all voted for Obama. Pfeifer says that there are 4 million voters who voted for Obama who sat out in 2016, choosing not to vote at all. Then, there are the voters who voted for Obama in 2012 and, then, chose to vote either Trump or a third party in 2016.
Therefore, the goal is to get all of those voters onto the side of Biden. How, though? Obama is still not actually in the mix. If they didn’t want to vote for a Democrat in 2016, what makes the DNC think that they’ll vote Democrat in 2020, especially when there’s such a weak candidate as Biden on the ballot?
Obama has already done a video message to endorse Biden, which took place in April amidst the pandemic. It was as low profile as it could be, and he was still looking to avoid getting involved in the national level of politics. This still has a number of people questioning if Obama really feels as if Biden is the right pick or if it’s just about getting a Democrat into the office at this point.
Many Democrats want to throw Obama’s name into the ring solely because he’s black. With all that’s happened with George Floyd and the criticism that Trump has received for how things were handled, they want Obama to stand behind Biden with a loud endorsement to ring out through the Obama-era voters.
According to Ben Tulchin, “Given what’s going on with criminal justice reform and Black Lives Matter, having the first African American president out there publicly backing Biden is extremely helpful.”
That’s great. Let’s use Obama to try to get votes for Biden. They must not think Americans can see through that façade.
By doing that, they also open up the attacks for Trump to shine through – including how some of the Obama administration policies did nothing to help the American middle class. So, go on Obama. Give it your best shot.
