In the wake of President Donald Trump’s recent comments to Representative Elijah Cummings about the poor conditions found in his district of West Baltimore, there has been much controversy. Many, including most liberals and Cummings himself, claim that these statements are based on race, bringing attention to the fact that many of the residents in the more deprived areas of this district are African American.
However, the more accurate statement is that Trump is calling attention to the lack of law and order that prevails in Baltimore, which has one of the highest crime rates in the nation. The subject of law and order has always been one that our president has said we need more of.
When he first ran for office in 2016, this became a significant part of his campaign, with him even claiming to be the “law and order candidate.” Could it be that we actually have a president who is merely trying to do what he promised he would? It would be quite a shock in light of some of our past presidents.
Nevertheless, this is not the first, nor likely the last, time Trump has called attention to poor and high crime areas in our nation. Also, he is calling out those who are in leadership over those areas. After all, isn’t it their job to notice and address these issues, to strive with everything in their power to make a better place to live for their constituents?
Trump has every reason to bring up the horrible conditions in Baltimore and want better for his countrymen.
Baltimore was named the murder capital of the United States and 2018. Besides, it ranked as the second most violent major city. It is also near the top of the list of most dangerous American cities, with only Detroit and St. Louis above it.
The crime rates there are so bad that the National Public Safety Partnership has given Baltimore participation in a grant program that would provide the city millions in funding and aid to remedy their current situation. To be even considered for the program, the NPSP says that a city must be a site of “sustained violence that far exceeds the national average.”
And it doesn’t take much to see that the area isn’t in great shape. Since Trump’s remarks thousands of pictures and videos have been posted confirming that much of West Baltimore is a “disgusting, rat and rodent-infested mess,” with trash strewn everywhere, houses abandoned, and people are living in conditions that compare to those in third world countries.
Bernie Sanders, former president Barack Obama, and other lawmakers, including Cummings himself, have all made mention in recent years of the atrocities of Baltimore.
And yet Cummings has been in charge of the area for the past 28 years with little to no changes being made, except that it has only gotten worse.
Trump also takes note of several other large cities, which have fallen into disrepair in recent years as well.
“Speaking of failing badly, has anyone seen what is happening to Nancy Pelosi’s district in San Francisco? It is not even recognizable lately. Something must be done before it is too late.”
News reports have been made on the conditions there as well, showing homeless living on city sidewalks, defecating where they sleep, with rats and rodents everywhere and nothing being done about it. Los Angeles is about the same.
And in Chicago, nine people were shot dead this weekend while 39 more were wounded. Does this sound like America to you? Where are our great cities of old, that boasted the fame of the nation and held untold wonders?
For the last few decades, they have been run by Democrats who have apparently not been doing their jobs, spending more time in Washington on a “witch hunt,” as the president calls it, then worrying about their own constituents’ lives.
It’s not racist to bring attention to our cities that need a change. We can no longer sit back and let our nation fall into obscurity and disrepair. President Trump was precisely on point, “Something must be done before it is too late.”
Law and order must be brought back to our nation and our cities. This call by liberals for the decriminalization of this and that and the release of thousands of prisoners won’t make our cities any better and is pure foolishness.
