Patrick Shanahan has made it known that he is dropping out of being considered for head Pentagon position. This was made public by President Trump earlier this week. President Trump also announced that he was appointing Mark Esper, who is the Secretary of the Army, to fill the position.
The reason for this move is found in the investigation of Shanahan. The media had found out about a violent altercation between Shanahan and his wife.
Shanahan made the statement in a letter of resignation “It is unfortunate that a painful and deeply personal family situation from long ago is being dredged up and painted in an incomplete and therefore misleading way in the course of this process.”
He continued to say that “I believe my continuing in the confirmation process would force my three children to relive a traumatic chapter in our family’s life and reopen wounds we have worked years to heal.” Shanahan believes that he needs to withdraw for the safety and well-being of his kids.
Shanahan believes that being a good father is more important than taking a high-ranking position within the United States government. It was during the altercation in 2010 that both his wife and himself told police that the other had hit the other person.
Shanahan reported that “Though my marriage ended in sorrow and disappointment, I never laid a hand on my then-wife and cooperated fully in a thorough law enforcement investigation that resulted in her being charged with assault against me-charges which I had dropped in the interest of my family.”
The media did more digging on Shanahan’s family and reported that in 2011 his son was arrested after assaulting his mother with a bat. It was reported that the incident was in self-defense. It is these kinds of stories that Shanahan is trying to keep from bringing up a sad part of his families past.
The President stated that Shanahan will not be considered for the position any longer.
President Trump was quick to write in a Tweet about Shanahan “Acting Secretary of Defense Patrick Shanahan, who has done a wonderful job, has decided not to go forward with his confirmation process so that he can devote more time to his family. I think Pat for his outstanding service and will be naming Secretary of the Army, Mark Esper, to be the new Acting Secretary of Defense. I know Mark, and have no doubt he will do a fantastic job!”
Mark Esper has been serving in his current position for two years. He is a graduate of the United States Military Academy.
The announcement that Patrick Shanahan was being nominated for the Secretary of Defense came last month from an announcement from the White House. Shanahan considered the nomination an honor, and he would go on to say “If confirmed by the Senate, I will continue to aggressive implementation of our National Defense Strategy. I remain committed to modernizing the force so or remarkable Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Marines have everything they need to keep out military lethal and our country safe.”
The problem started when the background paperwork was held up at the FBI. The Senate Armed Services Committee was waiting for the green light to begin the confirmation hearing process when the announcement came out that he was withdrawing from the process.
Patrick Shanahan has had a long career of excellence spanning back years to his employment with Boeing. He came to the Pentagon as a deputy working with Jim Mattis, who was the Defense Secretary at the time.
Patrick Shanahan has been the acting Defense Secretary since Jim Mattis announced his resignation over a year ago.
President Trump selected Patrick Shanahan for a good reason to serve as the Defense Secretary. His proven track record of working well and with integrity played a part in the nomination.
President Trump will have to choose another person to fill the role of the Defense Secretary. He stands committed to appointing people to key positions that have the goal of working to keep America safe and secure.
